In October, Nathan Benderson Park takes on a warmer shade of its usual blue-and-green landscape. Along the water, where rowers train and families gather for walks, the park will become a place for reflection, encouragement, and solidarity through United in Pink at NBP, a monthlong observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The initiative recognizes the many Sarasota-area residents whose lives have been shaped by breast cancer: survivors marking hard-won milestones, those currently navigating treatment, caregivers offering quiet strength, and families remembering people they have lost. Its message is both personal and communal. Breast cancer can touch nearly every circle of a community, and public gestures of support—visible, accessible, and shared—can offer a meaningful reminder that no one is facing the disease alone.

Nathan Benderson Park is a natural setting for that kind of gathering. Best known as a world-class destination for rowing and other water-based events, the park has also become one of Sarasota’s most welcoming public spaces. Its paths, open lawns, and broad views across the lake invite people to move at their own pace, whether they are training for competition, taking an evening walk, or simply finding a little room to breathe. In that sense, the park’s role in United in Pink extends beyond a backdrop: it places awareness in the middle of everyday community life.

Throughout October, NBP will host several initiatives in honor of the cause. While the individual activities may vary, the observance centers on the simple, enduring acts that matter most—showing up, sharing stories, extending care, and keeping loved ones close in memory. The month also offers an opportunity to connect health awareness with the restorative power of being outdoors, a combination especially fitting for a park that brings Sarasota together across generations and interests.

United in Pink at NBP will take place throughout October 2026, with the featured observance on Wednesday, October 14, at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota. Visitors are encouraged to watch the park’s communications for details about the month’s initiatives and ways to participate, honor someone affected by breast cancer, or simply add their presence to a community standing together.
