In Sarasota, where the Gulf is both backdrop and neighbor, ocean science has a way of feeling personal. A tide pool, a passing ray, or a handful of shells can turn an ordinary afternoon into a question: What lives there? How does it survive? And what, exactly, is happening beneath the surface? At Mote SEA Drop-In Science, those questions become an invitation to investigate.

Held on select dates throughout the year, the program is designed for families who want a compact dose of discovery rather than a full-day commitment. Each session offers a different hands-on activity or mini-exploration led by Mote educators, giving curious children—and the adults who accompany them—a chance to learn through observation, experimentation, and a little good-natured messiness. The format is intentionally approachable: come in, get immersed in the day’s subject, and leave with a new way of seeing the waters that shape life on Florida’s coast.

That sense of immediacy is part of Mote’s particular strength. For decades, the Sarasota-based marine science institution has connected research with public education, translating complex questions about ocean health, marine animals, and coastal ecosystems into experiences that invite participation. At the Science Education Aquarium, those connections can feel especially vivid. The building is not simply a place to look at aquatic life through glass; it is a setting where families can begin to understand the science behind the animals, habitats, and environmental changes they encounter around the region.

For local children, the value extends beyond a single Sunday activity. Sarasota’s beaches, bays, mangroves, and waterways are a living classroom, and early encounters with marine science can nurture the curiosity and care that healthy coastal communities require. A brief experiment or close look at an unfamiliar creature may be the beginning of a lasting interest in conservation—or simply a memorable family conversation on the drive home.

Mote SEA Drop-In Science takes place Sunday, November 1, 2026, at the Mote Science Education Aquarium, 225 University Town Center Dr. Families can drop in for a quick, hands-on exploration led by Mote educators and discover what new ocean question is waiting to be answered.
