On the eve of Halloween, few stories feel as psychologically charged as Carrie. A girl stands at the edge of the crowd, misunderstood and mistreated, while the adults around her fail to see the danger gathering in plain sight. Carrie: The Musical brings that familiar Stephen King tale to the stage with a score that gives its horror a pulse—and its isolated heroine a voice.
Adapted from King’s novel, the musical follows Carrie White, a shy, sheltered high school student caught between the cruelty of her classmates and the suffocating control of her deeply religious mother. At school, humiliation becomes ritual; at home, fear is treated as obedience. When a cruel prank at the senior prom pushes Carrie beyond the limits of endurance, the story’s simmering tensions ignite. What follows is not merely a supernatural revenge tale, but a stark examination of bullying, shame, power and the human cost of refusing to extend kindness.
With music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, Carrie: The Musical occupies an intriguing place in contemporary theater. Its score moves between soaring emotional passages and the jagged energy of adolescence, allowing the production to shift from intimate confession to full-scale theatrical unease. The result is a work that can be both melodramatic and deeply affecting, especially in its portrait of young people desperate to be seen and adults unequipped to protect them.
The timing gives the production an added charge. Sarasota-Bradenton audiences have long embraced theater that can entertain while opening a conversation, and Carrie arrives with questions that remain uncomfortably current: How does a community respond when cruelty becomes entertainment? What happens when a vulnerable person is pushed past the point of return? In the hands of a live cast, the story’s shocks are matched by the immediacy of its emotional stakes.
The production will be presented by Florida Cultural Group, Inc., also known as the Manatee Performing Arts Center, a regional venue that serves as a home for theatrical storytelling and local cultural life. Carrie: The Musical takes the stage Friday, October 30, 2026, at Florida Cultural Group, Inc. aka Manatee Performing Arts Center, 502 Third Avenue West. Expect an evening of powerful vocals, raw feeling and a haunting reminder that the smallest gestures of compassion can carry consequences far beyond the moment.
