In Sarasota, where creative work and practical know-how often share the same table, a spreadsheet can be as useful as a sketchbook. Behind many small businesses, nonprofit budgets, school projects, household plans and community initiatives is Microsoft Excel—an everyday tool that becomes considerably less intimidating once its logic is made clear.

That is the purpose of “EXCEL – LEVEL 1 – HANDS-ON CLASSES at SCF,” an introductory course designed for beginners and anyone who has ever opened a worksheet and wondered where to begin. Rather than treating Excel as a maze of mysterious boxes and commands, the class approaches it as an organized system for entering, calculating, arranging and understanding information.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of creating, navigating and saving spreadsheets, as well as moving between worksheets. The course also offers an introduction to Microsoft’s interface, including the ribbons and control groups that organize the program’s many functions. From there, instruction moves into the practical skills that make Excel useful: entering data, writing simple formulas, editing cells, formatting a worksheet, preparing pages and printing a finished document.

The hands-on format is particularly well suited to Sarasota’s broad community of lifelong learners. A retiree managing personal finances, an artist organizing a project budget, a volunteer tracking donations or a new professional building confidence with office software may all encounter the same initial challenge: knowing not just what Excel can do, but how to make it work calmly and efficiently. A guided class can turn that uncertainty into fluency, one cell and formula at a time.

The session is also part of a larger learning path. SCF is offering an Excel Accelerated Series, a monthly sequence covering Levels 1 through 4 at a discounted price for those who want to progress from beginner to expert. For newcomers, however, Level 1 provides a sensible starting point and a chance to build a strong foundation before taking on more advanced tools.

“EXCEL – LEVEL 1 – HANDS-ON CLASSES at SCF” takes place Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at State College of Florida. Registration is available through SCF, with the course offering a practical way to bring greater ease—and perhaps a little more order—to the data-filled corners of daily life.
