In the unsettled space between adolescence and adulthood, a single message can become a lifeline—or a lie with a life of its own. That emotional fault line is at the center of Dear Evan Hansen, the Tony Award–winning musical arriving for its area premiere at the Manatee Performing Arts Center this fall.

The story follows Evan Hansen, a 17-year-old accustomed to watching life from its margins. After an unexpected tragedy places him at the center of a story he never meant to tell, Evan discovers the intoxicating power of being seen. But as his longing for friendship and belonging draws him deeper into a web of well-intentioned deceptions, the musical asks difficult questions about identity, honesty and the cost of constructing a version of ourselves that others will accept.

Those questions have particular resonance in a region where community is often spoken of as a civic virtue, but where many people—young and old—still understand what it means to feel isolated in a crowded room. Dear Evan Hansen does not offer belonging as a simple or sentimental cure. Instead, it examines the ways loneliness can distort judgment, how grief reverberates through families, and why genuine connection requires more than being noticed. Its message of hope is hard-won, which may be part of the reason the show has connected so deeply with audiences around the world.

With a book by Steven Levenson, known for his work on Fosse/Verdon, and a contemporary score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the songwriting team behind La La Land and The Greatest Showman, the musical moves between intimate confession and soaring pop-inflected anthem. Songs including “Waving Through a Window,” “For Forever” and “You Will Be Found” have become touchstones for a generation navigating social media, public vulnerability and the complicated desire to belong.

Since its Broadway debut at the Music Box Theatre, Dear Evan Hansen has earned six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, as well as honors from the Drama League, Drama Desk, Obie, Outer Critics Circle and Helen Hayes Awards. Its Sarasota-Manatee presentation also reflects the role the Florida Cultural Group, Inc.—the nonprofit organization behind the Manatee Performing Arts Center—plays in bringing ambitious musical theater to the Gulf Coast. The production takes the stage Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the Florida Cultural Group, Inc., also known as the Manatee Performing Arts Center, 502 Third Avenue West in Bradenton.
