Some stories arrive at the theater already carrying a chill.

Some stories arrive at the theater already carrying a chill. Carrie: The Musical, with its prom-night spectacle, simmering teenage cruelty, and supernatural reckoning, is one of them—but its enduring power lies in how recognizable its pain remains. Beneath the telekinetic fury is a story about exclusion, shame, and the perilous cost of treating another person’s loneliness as entertainment.

Adapted from Stephen King’s 1974 novel, Carrie follows Carrie White, a sheltered high school student governed by the rigid beliefs of her religious mother and targeted by classmates who see her vulnerability as an invitation. After a humiliating prank at the senior prom pushes her past the limits of endurance, the quiet girl discovers a force within herself that can no longer be contained. The story’s horror is heightened by the musical form: soaring melodies and emotionally charged ensemble numbers give voice to the private fears, desires, and cruelties that might otherwise remain unspoken.

With music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, the show occupies an intriguing place in contemporary theater. It is both a cult favorite and a demanding piece of work, balancing heightened melodrama with an intimate portrait of adolescence. Its themes—bullying, social isolation, religious control, and the desperate longing to belong—feel particularly resonant in an era when young people’s inner lives are made visible, and vulnerable, in new ways.

For audiences in Sarasota and the surrounding region, the production offers another reason to look beyond the familiar downtown stages and engage with the broader cultural life of the Gulf Coast. The Manatee Performing Arts Center, operated by Florida Cultural Group, Inc., is a significant home for live performance in the area, connecting theatergoers across Sarasota and Manatee counties with productions that invite both entertainment and conversation. A work as emotionally volatile as Carrie belongs in that communal setting, where its questions about kindness and consequence can continue beyond the final curtain.

Carrie: The Musical will be presented Friday, October 23, 2026, at the Florida Cultural Group, Inc., also known as the Manatee Performing Arts Center, at 502 Third Avenue West. Expect a dark, dramatic evening of powerful vocals, raw storytelling, and a climax that turns the theater’s oldest ritual—the high school dance—into something unforgettable.
