On a stage just north of Sarasota, the senior prom is about to become a reckoning. Carrie: The Musical, Stephen King’s unnerving story of cruelty, repression and unleashed power, arrives with the force of a storm gathering behind the Florida sky.
At its center is Carrie White, a shy, isolated teenager whose classmates treat her as an object of ridicule and whose strictly religious mother keeps her trapped in a world of fear and shame. Then comes the prom-night prank—the seemingly final humiliation in a lifetime of them—and Carrie discovers that the force she has been suppressing is not merely emotional. The consequences are devastating.
Adapted from King’s 1974 novel, Carrie: The Musical occupies a fascinating place in the American theater landscape. It is both a supernatural thriller and an intensely intimate portrait of adolescence: the longing to be seen, the damage inflicted by group cruelty, and the terrible volatility of a person pushed beyond endurance. With music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, the musical gives voice to characters often reduced to archetypes in horror stories. Carrie’s classmates are not simply villains, her mother is not merely a monster, and the prom is more than a setting for spectacle. Each is part of a social ecosystem in which small acts of kindness—or their absence—can alter a life.
That tension makes the production particularly resonant for a region as community-minded as Sarasota and Manatee counties, where theater serves not only as entertainment but as a gathering place for difficult conversations. The story’s darkness is balanced by its emotional directness: soaring contemporary music, raw confrontations and the uneasy recognition that the most frightening forces may begin with ordinary human behavior.
The production will be presented by Florida Cultural Group, Inc., the organization behind Manatee Performing Arts Center. Located in Bradenton’s historic downtown theater district, the center has become a familiar destination for audiences throughout the greater Sarasota-Manatee arts community, offering a home for local performers, ambitious musical theater and productions that invite audiences to linger over what they have seen.
Carrie: The Musical takes the stage Thursday, October 22, 2026, at Florida Cultural Group, Inc., also known as Manatee Performing Arts Center, 502 Third Avenue West in Bradenton. For Sarasota audiences, it is an evening of powerful vocals, stark emotion and a chilling reminder that the need to belong is never a small thing.
