On a Monday morning in October, the fairways at Lakewood National will become a meeting place for an especially Sarasota kind of civic spirit: part friendly competition, part professional gathering, and part investment in the next generation.
The occasion is Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast’s 2026 Annual Golf Classic, a fundraiser that turns a day on the course into sustained support for one-to-one youth mentoring. Through its “Bigs” and “Littles” programs, the organization connects young people with caring adult mentors who offer companionship, encouragement, and a dependable presence—relationships that can shape confidence and possibility well beyond a single school year. In a community with a strong tradition of volunteerism and philanthropy, that continuity matters. Mentoring is not a quick intervention; it is an act of showing up, again and again.
The tournament also reflects the social fabric of Sarasota and the broader Sun Coast, where business leaders, community advocates, and longtime supporters often find common ground around practical ways to strengthen local lives. A golf classic offers an easygoing setting for networking, but its purpose is more focused than the usual corporate outing. Each foursome helps extend the reach of programs designed to ensure that area youth have meaningful, consistent support.
The day begins with a continental breakfast before golfers take to the course for a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Along the way, guests can add a little suspense to the scorecard with a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle, and a golf cart chance drawing featuring prizes. After play, the clubhouse will host an awards reception, bringing participants together to celebrate the day’s winners and acknowledge the sponsors and supporters whose generosity helps make the organization’s work possible.
Set within Lakewood National’s manicured golf setting, the event pairs the pleasures of a polished course with a cause rooted in personal connection. It is a chance to gather a team, meet fellow community-minded players, and contribute to relationships that can leave a lasting mark on local children and families.
