In the bright, communal world of musical theater, few stories cast as long a shadow as Carrie. Stephen King’s tale of a bullied teenager, a repressive home and a single night of catastrophic reckoning arrives on the Gulf Coast in a form that is as emotionally expansive as it is unsettling: Carrie: The Musical.

The stage adaptation follows Carrie White, a shy high school student whose isolation is compounded by the cruelty of her classmates and the suffocating religious fervor of her mother. When a humiliating incident at the senior prom pushes her past the limits of endurance, Carrie’s long-suppressed power erupts, transforming a familiar coming-of-age ritual into something tragic and terrifying. With music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, the musical gives the story a contemporary score and a heightened theatrical language—one capable of moving from vulnerable confession to full-throated horror in a single breath.

That combination makes Carrie more than a cult favorite or a provocative night at the theater. Its concerns—bullying, social exclusion, parental control and the ache of wanting to belong—remain painfully recognizable, especially in an era when young people’s private struggles can be amplified by public scrutiny. The musical asks its audience to sit with an uncomfortable question: What happens when a community notices suffering only after it has become impossible to ignore?

For Sarasota and Manatee audiences, the production also offers the pleasures of a regional theater outing: live voices, immediate storytelling and the shared tension of watching a familiar narrative unfold in the room. The Manatee Performing Arts Center, operated by Florida Cultural Group, Inc., has long provided a home for local theatrical ambition and a gathering place for audiences from across the region. Its location in downtown Bradenton makes the evening feel connected to the broader cultural life of the Sarasota-Manatee area, where the arts routinely cross the bridge between entertainment and civic conversation.

Carrie: The Musical promises a dark, dramatic experience shaped by raw emotion, soaring vocals and a climax that has become one of popular storytelling’s most indelible shocks. It will be presented Thursday, October 15, 2026, at the Florida Cultural Group, Inc., also known as the Manatee Performing Arts Center, 502 Third Avenue West in Bradenton.
