A spreadsheet can begin as a simple list and, before long, become the quiet infrastructure of a business, a nonprofit, a classroom, or a household budget. In Sarasota’s increasingly data-minded community, knowing how to move beyond basic formulas is less about mastering software than gaining confidence in the decisions that software helps make. That is the purpose of Excel – Level 2, a hands-on class at State College of Florida.

Designed for participants who already use Excel regularly, the course picks up where introductory instruction leaves off. Students will work with advanced formulas and functions, including financial, logical, and date-and-time tools, while learning how to control relative and absolute references—the small distinctions that can determine whether a worksheet behaves intelligently or falls apart when information changes.

The class also addresses the practical challenges that arise when a spreadsheet grows more complex. Participants will learn to work across multiple worksheets, use 3D formulas and references, and organize information in tables. Additional topics include total rows, sorting, filtering, data validation, and subtotaling. In other words, this is Excel as it tends to exist in real life: layered, interconnected, and in need of systems that make information easier to read, check, and use.

That emphasis on applied learning is particularly relevant in Sarasota, where small businesses, arts organizations, community groups, and independent professionals often rely on versatile digital skills to manage budgets, track participation, evaluate results, and keep day-to-day operations moving. A well-built spreadsheet may not attract the attention of a gallery opening or a concert, but it can quietly support the people and institutions that give the region its character.

The course is intended for those who have completed Excel – Level 1 and/or have a working knowledge of Excel, making it a natural next step for anyone ready to replace trial and error with a more deliberate command of the program. Registration is available through SCF. Excel – Level 2 takes place Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at State College of Florida, with the hands-on format offering participants the chance to apply each technique as they learn it.
