As the sun lowers over Lakewood Ranch, the lawn at Waterside Park will trade its afternoon quiet for the familiar pleasures of a community movie night: blankets unfurling across the grass, children darting toward inflatable attractions, and the first rustle of popcorn bags before the screen lights up.
Movie in the Park offers an uncomplicated kind of evening—one built around fresh air, shared laughter, and the chance to see neighbors outside the routines of home, school, and work. In a region where outdoor gathering is part of the culture, the event makes good use of Waterside Park’s open setting, turning a neighborhood green space into an informal cinema beneath the Florida sky.
The monthly series also reflects something enduring about family entertainment in the Sarasota-Manatee area. A free public event lowers the barrier to participation, inviting families, friends, and visitors to spend time together without the expense or formality of a night out. The setting is relaxed, but the ritual is recognizable: arrive early, claim a patch of lawn, settle in as daylight fades, and let a film become the centerpiece of the evening.
For children, the night begins well before the opening scene. Inflatables will be available at 6 p.m., giving younger guests room to burn off some energy while adults arrange blankets and lawn chairs. Concessions from We B’ Poppin Popcorn and Kettle Corn add the essential moviegoing accompaniment, with the aroma of freshly popped corn drifting through the park. Seating is first come, first served, so families should bring their own blankets or lawn chairs and plan accordingly.
The series is graciously sponsored by Grace Community Church, whose support helps keep the event free and accessible. That spirit of welcome is central to the evening: Movie in the Park is less about the distinction between audience and community than about bringing the two together, one sunset and one shared story at a time.
The next gathering takes place Friday, October 9, 2026, at Waterside Park, 7301 Island Cove Terrace, Lakewood Ranch. Inflatables begin at 6 p.m., and the movie starts at sunset. Bring a blanket or lawn chair, arrive early for a comfortable spot, and leave room for popcorn.
