Featured Moonlit Paddle – Kayaking with Mote
After sunset, Sarasota’s waterways take on a second life.

After sunset, Sarasota’s waterways take on a second life. The familiar geometry of mangrove shorelines softens, the city’s glow shimmers across the bay, and the smallest sounds—a paddle dipping into black water, a fish breaking the surface—seem newly legible. On October 25, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium invites the community to experience that nocturnal landscape from the seat of a kayak during its Featured Moonlit Paddle.
The outing offers more than a pleasant evening outdoors. Sarasota is a coastal city whose identity is inseparable from the health of its bays, estuaries, beaches, and barrier islands, yet much of that ecosystem remains invisible to those who encounter it only in daylight. A guided paddle creates an intimate vantage point, one that encourages curiosity as much as recreation. Under the moon, participants may notice the shifting silhouettes of mangroves, the movement of marine life beneath the surface, and the subtle ways weather, tide, and light shape the coast.
That perspective is central to Mote’s work. Founded in Sarasota in 1955, Mote has grown from a small shark research station into an internationally recognized marine science institution, with programs spanning coral restoration, fisheries, conservation, animal health, and public education. Its events translate research into experience, connecting the laboratory’s broad scientific mission to the waters that residents and visitors navigate every day. A moonlit paddle is consequently both a field trip and a quiet reminder: the bay is not scenery but habitat, infrastructure, and a shared responsibility.
There is also something fitting about encountering Sarasota this way. The city’s cultural calendar often celebrates what happens onstage, in galleries, and at the table; this event turns attention outward, toward the living environment that gives the region its character. It asks participants to slow down, listen, and let the coastline set the pace.
Featured Moonlit Paddle – Kayaking with Mote takes place Sunday, October 25, 2026, through Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota. Participants should consult Mote’s event information for registration details, meeting and launch location, timing, equipment requirements, and weather-related updates before setting out.
