In Sarasota, Halloween arrives with more than pumpkins and porch lights. At Mote A-Scare-ium, the mysteries of the natural world become part of the evening’s play: a face painted like a reef creature, a clue tucked beside an educational display, and the possibility that candy and conservation can share the same itinerary.

Designed for families, the event offers a spirited way to experience the Mote Science Education Aquarium while connecting Halloween traditions to the living systems that define Florida. Guests can move through educational eco-stations, where the region’s waterways, wildlife, and environmental challenges take center stage, then turn toward the lighter pleasures of the night: candy for trick-or-treaters, music by DJ Lira, and face painting by Akiko.

That blend of fun and learning reflects Mote’s broader role in Sarasota. As a science education destination, the aquarium helps translate marine research into experiences that are accessible to young visitors and their grown-ups. In a community shaped by the Gulf, bays, rivers, and the working ecosystems around them, that kind of familiarity matters. Children who arrive looking for sweets may leave with a new question about sea turtles, water quality, or the animals living just beyond the shoreline.

A scavenger hunt will continue throughout the week, giving families a reason to extend the experience beyond one evening and explore at their own pace. The event also pairs naturally with another seasonal gathering nearby: after visiting the aquarium, families can head to Nathan Benderson Park for Trick-or-Treat on the Lake, creating a Halloween route that moves from marine science to the park’s broad waterside setting.

Mote A-Scare-ium takes place Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at the Mote Science Education Aquarium, 225 University Town Center Drive. With music, face painting, treats, and science woven into the evening, it offers a distinctly Sarasota way to celebrate Halloween—curious, communal, and close to the natural world.
