Moonlit Paddle – Kayaking with Mote
Before Sarasota Bay fully stirs, its shallow waters are already busy with life.

Before Sarasota Bay fully stirs, its shallow waters are already busy with life. Seagrass bends with the tide, wading birds work the shoreline, and somewhere beyond the next ripple, a dolphin may surface. Moonlit Paddle – Kayaking with Mote offers a quiet way to enter that world—not as a spectator on the shore, but as a participant moving at the pace of the bay.
Led by Mote, the Sarasota-based marine science institution whose work has helped make the region a national center for coastal research and conservation, the guided tour invites paddlers to explore one of the bay’s most important habitats. Seagrass beds are more than a picturesque backdrop: They shelter young fish, provide feeding grounds for manatees and birds, and help stabilize the seafloor. From a kayak, their significance becomes immediate. The water is close, the shoreline recedes, and even a small change in color or movement can reveal an entire ecosystem at work.
The experience is designed for both curious newcomers and those who already feel at home on the water. Participants will paddle across the shallow grass flats while keeping watch for dolphins, manatees, shorebirds, and other wildlife. The emphasis is not on collecting sightings but on understanding the delicate web that supports them—and the responsibility Sarasota shares in protecting it.
That sense of connection is particularly meaningful in a community shaped by the bay. Sarasota’s identity is tied to its waterfront, yet the health of that waterfront depends on systems that are easy to overlook: clear water, thriving seagrass, and the species that rely on them. A morning spent gliding quietly over those habitats offers a more intimate perspective than any postcard view, reminding us that conservation begins with attention.
Moonlit Paddle – Kayaking with Mote takes place Monday, October 26, 2026, on Sarasota Bay. The program is open to participants age 12 and older; paddlers ages 12 through 17 must be accompanied by an adult. With its combination of gentle adventure, wildlife watching, and hands-on environmental learning, the outing makes the bay not merely a setting, but the day’s central character.
