Moonlit Paddle – Kayaking with Mote

Sarasota Bay is most revealing when seen from the water. From a kayak, the shoreline recedes, the city quiets, and a familiar landscape becomes an intricate living system: seagrass swaying beneath the surface, wading birds working the shallows, and the occasional ripple hinting at a dolphin or manatee nearby.

Moonlit Paddle – Kayaking with Mote offers a guided way into that world, pairing the pleasures of an outdoor excursion with the local knowledge for which Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is known. Participants will paddle across shallow seagrass beds while learning to notice the wildlife that depends on them. The experience is less about covering distance than slowing down long enough to understand the bay’s rhythms—and the importance of protecting the habitat just beneath the surface.

For Sarasota, that perspective carries particular weight. The bay is both a defining feature of the region and a working ecosystem under constant pressure from development, storm activity, pollution and changing environmental conditions. Seagrass meadows provide shelter and feeding grounds for fish and other marine life, while also helping sustain the larger food web that supports dolphins, manatees and coastal birds. A guided outing can turn environmental awareness from an abstract concern into something immediate: a bird lifting from the mangroves, a manatee surfacing nearby, or the sudden flash of a fish in clear shallows.

Mote’s work has long connected scientific research with public engagement, giving residents and visitors a closer look at the creatures and habitats that make Sarasota Bay distinctive. On the water, that mission takes a particularly direct form. The kayak’s low profile allows for a quieter approach, and the pace leaves room for observation, questions and the small surprises that make a morning outdoors memorable.

Moonlit Paddle is open to participants ages 12 and older; paddlers ages 12 through 17 must be accompanied by an adult. The guided tour takes place Sunday, October 25, 2026, on Sarasota Bay, with the specific launch and meeting information available through Mote’s event registration materials. Plan for a sunlit start, an unhurried paddle and a fresh appreciation for the watery landscape at the heart of Sarasota.
