As the sun lowers over Sarasota, Nathan Benderson Park will begin its transformation from an arena of oars and finish lines into a field of floating light. On Saturday, October 17, families, friends and neighbors will gather at the water’s edge to write wishes, memories and hopes onto lanterns, then watch them drift across the lake in a slow, luminous procession.
Water Lantern Festival belongs to a growing family of celebrations known by many names—lantern festivals, lights festivals, floating lanterns, even water festivals—but its appeal is wonderfully simple. Participants design a lantern of their own, add a personal message and release it with thousands of others. Reflected in the darkening water, the lights create a communal image out of individual sentiments: a quiet reminder that private hopes can become part of something shared.
That spirit feels especially fitting in Sarasota, a community accustomed to gathering around water. From the bayfront to the region’s parks and beaches, the landscape often provides the setting for civic life, and Nathan Benderson Park has become one of its most distinctive public stages. Best known internationally for its world-class rowing course and major sporting events, the park also offers space for concerts, festivals and everyday recreation. Its broad lake and open promenades make it an apt setting for an evening built around reflection, creativity and connection.
The festival is designed to be accessible across generations. Children can decorate lanterns alongside parents and grandparents; friends can turn the ritual into a shared remembrance; and strangers, standing together along the shore, become part of the same fleeting tableau. Food trucks will be on-site, with music and additional activities helping shape the afternoon before the lantern launch. The gates open at 4 p.m., leaving time to settle in, make a design and enjoy the park as daylight gives way to dusk.
The launch takes place from 7 to 8 p.m., when the water will carry the evening’s collected wishes into the Sarasota night. Water Lantern Festival comes to Nathan Benderson Park on Saturday, October 17, 2026; admission details and further information are available through the Water Lantern Festival’s official event information.
