Morning Paddle – Kayaking with Mote

Before Sarasota fully shakes off the morning, the bay is already at work. Tidal currents move through the seagrass, mullet flash beneath the surface, and wading birds begin their daily search along the shoreline. On Sunday, October 4, participants in Morning Paddle – Kayaking with Mote will have a front-row seat to that quiet, intricate drama.

The guided kayak tour offers an unhurried way to experience Sarasota Bay, where the landscape is best understood from the water. Paddlers will cross shallow seagrass beds and look for the wildlife that depends on them, from fish sheltering among the blades to birds working the edges of the flats. In a region often encountered at cruising speed—by car, boat, or bicycle—a kayak changes the pace. The shoreline comes closer, the water becomes more legible, and small movements begin to matter.

That perspective is especially meaningful in Sarasota, where the health of the bay is inseparable from the health of the community. Seagrass meadows help provide habitat for marine life, stabilize the seafloor, and support the larger web of species that makes the estuary such a defining part of local life. They are also vulnerable, shaped by water quality, weather, development, and the choices made on land. A morning spent moving quietly through this habitat turns environmental awareness into something tangible: not a lecture, but a landscape observed at close range.

The outing is presented by Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, a Sarasota institution whose work spans marine research, conservation, education, and public engagement. Since its beginnings as a small shark-research laboratory, Mote has grown into one of the region’s most recognizable scientific and cultural anchors. Its programs invite residents and visitors alike to understand the Gulf and bay not simply as scenery, but as living systems worthy of attention and care.

For those who prefer their outdoor adventures with a little interpretation—and their Sundays with an early dose of salt air—the paddle offers a fitting introduction to the day. Morning Paddle – Kayaking with Mote takes place Sunday, October 4, 2026, at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway.
