On the water, service can look a little different.

On the water, service can look a little different. At Emerson Point Preserve, a morning of paddling becomes an act of care: participants move through the preserve’s winding waterways, taking in the quiet beauty of the coast while helping remove the debris that threatens it. On Saturday, October 3, the MYP Paddle & Pickup Service Project invites Sarasota- and Manatee-area young professionals to trade the conference room for the shoreline and put community spirit into motion.
The event’s appeal is both practical and deeply local. Emerson Point is the kind of place that makes the region feel abundantly fortunate—an open, tidal landscape where mangroves, marshes and upland habitats meet at the mouth of the Manatee River. Its trails and waterways offer a close-up view of Florida’s natural character, but they also reveal the pressures that come with a busy, growing coast. A piece of plastic or discarded fishing line may seem insignificant on its own; gathered over time, such litter can imperil wildlife, degrade habitat and diminish the experience for everyone who comes after.
A paddle-and-pickup project addresses that problem with an appealing combination of purpose and place. It turns environmental stewardship into a shared outing, one that encourages participants to notice the preserve not as scenery but as a living system. The work is hands-on and immediate: each item collected is one less hazard in the water and one small contribution to the health of the estuary.
The project also reflects the role that MYP—an organization centered on bringing young professionals together—can play in the wider community. Professional networks are often discussed in terms of connection and opportunity, but their most lasting value may be found in creating relationships around common responsibility. An effort like this offers participants a chance to meet neighbors, strengthen ties across the Sarasota-Manatee region and support a public place that belongs to everyone.
There is something especially fitting about beginning a weekend with a paddle, a bag of collected litter and a clearer sense of the landscape we share. The MYP Paddle & Pickup Service Project takes place Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Emerson Point Preserve, 5801 17th St W, Palmetto.
