In the quiet hours before a new ordinance reaches a city commission agenda—or a proposed state law begins to reshape the cost of doing business—there is often a room where the consequences are being considered in practical terms. On November 11, the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance’s Governmental Affairs Committee will gather to do precisely that: track the decisions emerging from government and help determine how the local business community responds.
The committee’s work is less about spectacle than stewardship. Its members monitor legislative activity, develop advocacy positions, and maintain relationships with elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels. For a region growing as quickly and ambitiously as Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch, that role carries particular weight. Questions involving transportation, infrastructure, land use, workforce development, taxation, regulation, and public investment do not remain abstract for long; they shape commutes, storefronts, hiring plans, housing costs, and the character of the communities themselves.
A strong business community is not simply a collection of individual enterprises. It is also a network capable of articulating shared concerns—and of listening carefully enough to distinguish a temporary frustration from a lasting civic priority. The Governmental Affairs Committee provides that connective tissue, bringing business leaders into a continuing conversation with the people who make and administer public policy.
The committee meets on the second Wednesday of each month, with a time commitment of roughly one to two hours. That regular cadence matters. Advocacy is rarely accomplished in a single visit or statement; it depends on familiarity, follow-through, and relationships built before a pressing issue arrives. Under the chairmanship of Nick Feather, the group offers members a structured way to stay informed and participate in the region’s public life without stepping away from the day-to-day demands of running a business.
The meeting is reserved for members, making it a working session rather than a public forum. Those interested in the committee or its activities can contact Feather at nicholas.feather@capstanfcg.com. The next gathering will take place Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at 4 p.m. at the Lakewood Ranch Business Alliance, 5391 Lakewood Ranch Blvd N.
