In Sarasota, where an evening out can move easily from gallery to bar, Cocktails + Culture offers a particularly elegant bridge between the two. The experience begins with Chie Fueki: Painting the Floating World, an exhibition whose dreamlike works draw viewers into a world of shifting perspectives, layered imagery, and visual references that feel at once intimate and expansive. From there, the conversation continues in the glass.

Led by cocktail expert Brad Coburn, the evening invites guests to discover the flavors of Japan through two signature cocktails inspired by Fueki’s exhibition. The pairing is more than a decorative flourish. Japanese ingredients, techniques, and drinking traditions offer a rich vocabulary for thinking about art: balance and contrast, restraint and surprise, clarity and depth. A cocktail can be composed with the same attention as a painting, its colors, textures, and aromas unfolding gradually rather than announcing themselves all at once.

That spirit makes the program a natural fit for Sarasota Art Museum, known locally as SAM. Housed in the former Sarasota High School, the museum has transformed a landmark of the city’s architectural and educational history into a lively center for contemporary art. Its exhibitions and public programs encourage visitors to linger, look closely, and consider how art connects with the broader rhythms of daily life. Events such as this one extend that mission beyond the gallery walls, creating an atmosphere where interpretation can be social, sensory, and pleasantly unexpected.

Fueki’s work, with its layered imagery and floating sense of place, seems especially suited to an evening that treats culture as something to be tasted as well as seen. Coburn’s cocktails will offer a fresh way into the exhibition, whether guests arrive with a practiced interest in mixology, a curiosity about Japanese flavors, or simply the desire to spend a Monday evening in good company and beautiful surroundings.

Cocktails + Culture takes place Monday, November 2, 2026, at Sarasota Art Museum, 1001 South Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. The program centers on Chie Fueki: Painting the Floating World and includes two signature cocktails led by Brad Coburn—an intimate pairing of art, conversation, and the pleasures of the glass.
