On an ordinary afternoon, the geometric order of Sol LeWitt’s prints can invite quiet concentration: lines repeat, shapes shift, and small variations begin to feel quietly immense. After hours, with Sarasota Orchestra musicians performing in the galleries, that stillness will acquire another dimension. At Music in the Galleries, visual pattern and live sound will occupy the same space, asking visitors to experience LeWitt’s work not only as something to look at, but as something to move through and listen alongside.
The performance is presented in connection with Sarasota Art Museum’s exhibition Beautiful Ideas: The Prints of Sol LeWitt, which brings together more than 100 prints by one of the most influential figures in conceptual and minimalist art. LeWitt’s work is famously rigorous—built from systems, instructions, repetition and variation—but it is never merely cold or mechanical. Across a wall or across a series, the works reveal the pleasure of a simple idea unfolding with precision.
That sense of structure makes the collaboration with Sarasota Orchestra especially apt. Music, like LeWitt’s art, can transform a limited vocabulary into an expansive experience. A recurring phrase gathers meaning through repetition; a subtle change in rhythm or emphasis alters the whole.
