In Sarasota, the line between looking and listening has always been pleasantly porous. A painting can set a rhythm; a saxophone can alter the way a room feels. On September 10, Sarasota Art Museum will bring those impulses together for an evening of live jazz, inviting visitors to move through its galleries with music in the air and more time to linger over the work.

Hosted by the Jazz Club of Sarasota, the event offers a relaxed, after-hours way to experience one of the city’s most distinctive cultural spaces. Rather than treating the museum as a quiet container for art, the evening acknowledges its social life: a place where exhibitions prompt conversation, where neighbors gather, and where culture feels less like a formal appointment than part of the city’s daily rhythm.

The setting adds its own resonance. Sarasota Art Museum occupies the former Sarasota High School, a landmark building whose Mediterranean Revival architecture is woven into the city’s visual memory. Since opening as a contemporary art museum, it has given that historic structure a new purpose, pairing ambitious exhibitions with programs that invite the broader community inside. Jazz, with its emphasis on exchange, improvisation, and attentive listening, is a natural guest.

The Jazz Club of Sarasota has long helped keep that musical tradition visible and vital locally, presenting performances and educational programs that connect seasoned listeners with new audiences. Its presence at the museum makes for an especially appealing pairing: the visual arts unfolding at close range, the music changing from moment to moment, and the easy pleasure of an evening that does not require choosing one form of culture over another.

Throughout the event, the museum’s galleries will remain open with extended hours, allowing guests to take in the exhibitions at an unhurried pace. The Bistro will also be available, as will SHOP!, the museum store, making room for a drink, a bite, or a browse between sets. It is the sort of program that suits Sarasota in September—casual but considered, rooted in the arts, and generous about how an evening can be spent.

Live jazz at Sarasota Art Museum takes place Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Sarasota Art Museum. The galleries, Bistro, and SHOP! will remain open during the extended hours.
