On the water, Sarasota has always had a talent for making a spectacle of motion: shells slicing across the lake, paddles rising and falling in unison, dragon boats surging toward the finish. On land, it has an equal affection for a well-poured beer. At Nathan Benderson Park this October, those two instincts meet in a festival built around speed, conviviality and the pleasures of a very good afternoon outdoors.

Now in its second year, Sarasota Oktoberfest—presented by FloridaCentral Credit Union and featuring the Benderson Chase Regatta—joins two regional traditions for a weekend of “Paddles, Oars, & Pours.” The regatta brings youth rowers, masters competitors and adult dragon boat teams to the course, offering the kind of close-up athletic drama that has made Benderson Park a destination for rowing communities well beyond Sarasota. Along the shore, Oktoberfest supplies a livelier kind of cheering section: German food, live bands, a beer garden, a DJ and the competitive spectacle of stein-hoisting.

The pairing feels particularly apt for Sarasota, a city whose cultural life is increasingly defined by the relationship between its polished institutions and its broad, participatory community. At Benderson Park, elite sport and easygoing recreation share the same landscape. Families can watch races from the shoreline, wander through the Kids Zone and settle in for music and food, while rowing enthusiasts have the rare pleasure of seeing serious competition unfold in one of the country’s premier aquatic venues.

That transformation is part of the park’s larger story. Over the past decade, what was once a relatively hidden community asset has grown into a globally recognized destination for aquatic sport, hosting major competitions and drawing athletes from around the world. Events such as this one give the public a chance to experience the park not simply as a backdrop for racing, but as a gathering place—one with room for precision, pageantry and a little celebratory excess.

Admission to the event is free, making it an inviting outing for families, spectators and anyone curious about the energy that gathers around the lake. Parking is $20 per car, payable upon arrival. Sarasota Oktoberfest and the Benderson Chase Regatta take place Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Nathan Benderson Park, where the weekend’s races, music, food and cold brews will bring a distinctly Sarasota-style welcome to fall.
