Oceanography Scout Merit Badge (Virtual Program)
For a community shaped by tides, Sarasota’s ocean is never merely scenery.

For a community shaped by tides, Sarasota’s ocean is never merely scenery. It is a classroom, a livelihood, a source of wonder—and, increasingly, a subject that rewards careful study. On November 14, Scouts will have the chance to explore that world from home through the Oceanography Scout Merit Badge, a live virtual program built around both instruction and hands-on discovery.
The workshop will guide participants through the merit badge workbook while introducing the concepts behind the requirements with demonstrations. That combination matters. Oceanography can sound vast and technical, but the subject begins with tangible questions: How does water move? What forces shape coastlines? How do marine organisms adapt to their environments? For Sarasota-area Scouts, these are not abstract ideas. They connect to the Gulf of Mexico, Sarasota Bay, barrier islands, mangrove shorelines, seagrass beds, and the many forms of life that make this region an unusually rich place to learn about the sea.
The virtual format also broadens access. A Scout need not be standing on a dock or gathered at a waterfront facility to begin thinking like an oceanographer. With a computer, a workbook, and a few ordinary household materials, participants can investigate foundational ideas in a setting that is both structured and approachable. The program’s live, interactive format leaves room for demonstrations and engagement rather than treating the merit badge as a passive online lecture.
Registration confirmation will include the Oceanography workbook along with a guide to the household materials needed for several activities. Most of the merit badge requirements will be completed during the workshop, giving Scouts a substantial start—or, for some, nearly all the momentum they need—to finish their work. Families should read the accompanying materials in advance and gather supplies before the session begins; preparation will make the demonstrations more useful and the experience more fluid.
In a coastal community, ocean literacy is part of civic literacy. Understanding the systems beyond the shoreline can deepen appreciation for the waters that support Sarasota’s wildlife, recreation, economy, and identity. The Oceanography Scout Merit Badge program offers young people a focused way to build that understanding, one observation and experiment at a time. The virtual workshop takes place Saturday, November 14, 2026, online; the registration confirmation will provide the workbook, preparation guide, and access details.
