On a Thursday in November, when Sarasota’s light turns especially clear and the Gulf begins to feel like a subject for study rather than scenery, local homeschool families will have an invitation to look more closely. Homeschool Days at Mote Science Education Aquarium offers students a chance to step beyond the textbook and into the living questions of marine science—how animals adapt, how ecosystems change, and what it means to care for the waters just beyond our shoreline.
Designed for homeschool students ages 6 to 14, the program brings Mote research into an engaging, hands-on setting. Rather than treating science as a collection of facts to memorize, the day is built around observation, experimentation and discovery, giving young learners room to ask questions and make connections at their own pace. Monthly classes for children ages 6 to 9 provide an especially welcoming entry point, introducing foundational ideas through activities suited to curious, energetic minds.
That approach reflects Mote’s longstanding role in Sarasota: part research institution, part public classroom, and part advocate for the region’s marine environment. For decades, Mote scientists have studied the Gulf’s animals and habitats, from sharks and sea turtles to coral reefs and red tide. At Mote SEA, that work becomes accessible to families in a setting designed to make science feel immediate. A lesson about an ecosystem is no longer an abstraction when students can encounter the animals, technologies and real-world questions connected to it.
The timing also feels meaningful. Sarasota’s relationship with the water is central to its identity, economy and daily pleasures, but that relationship comes with responsibilities. Programs that help children understand marine life—and see themselves as participants in its future—nurture a form of stewardship that begins with curiosity. For homeschooling families, the event offers both a lively change of classroom and an opportunity to connect with others who value experiential learning.
Homeschool Days takes place Thursday, November 12, 2026, at Mote Science Education Aquarium, 225 University Town Center Dr. Families planning to attend should consult Mote SEA for current registration details and class information, including the schedule for the age-specific sessions.
