On a weekday morning, the Gulf’s most intriguing lessons may begin not at a desk, but beside a tank, beneath a microscope, or in the middle of a question no textbook can quite answer. At Mote Science Education Aquarium, homeschool students are invited to investigate the marine world through the kind of hands-on learning that turns curiosity into discovery.
Homeschool Days offers children ages 6 to 14 an opportunity to explore the science behind Mote’s research and the living systems that surround Sarasota. The program is designed around engagement: observing closely, asking questions, testing ideas and making connections between the creatures in the water and the coastal environment just beyond the aquarium doors. For children who learn best by doing, marine science provides an especially rich classroom.
That sense of immediacy matters in a place like Sarasota, where the Gulf is not an abstract subject but a defining presence. Local waterways, estuaries and beaches shape the region’s economy, recreation and identity, while also facing pressures that require informed stewardship. Introducing young people to the science of these ecosystems can help nurture a lasting relationship with the place they call home.
Mote Science Education Aquarium extends the educational mission of Mote Marine Laboratory into an accessible, public-facing setting. The University Town Center facility offers families a window into marine research and conservation, connecting the work of scientists with the everyday wonder of sea life. Homeschool Days builds on that bridge, creating room for students to encounter big ideas at an age-appropriate scale and alongside other young learners.
The event is part of a monthly class series, with programming designed for younger students ages 6 to 9, while the broader Homeschool Days experience welcomes participants through age 14. That range reflects the many ways children engage with science: through imaginative observation, careful experimentation, lively discussion and the growing ability to think like a researcher.
For Sarasota families building their own educational rhythms, the morning offers more than a change of scenery. It is a chance to place learning in the company of living systems—to see how a question about an animal, a habitat or a drop of seawater can open onto the larger story of the Gulf. Homeschool Days takes place Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at Mote Science Education Aquarium, 225 University Town Center Drive.
