On a weekday when many children are settling into the familiar rhythms of home learning, Sarasota’s waters offer a different kind of classroom: one filled with movement, mystery and the occasional flash of a fin. At Homeschool Days, students can step inside the work of marine science—not as spectators, but as curious participants.

Hosted at the Mote Science Education Aquarium, the program invites homeschool students ages 6 to 14 to explore the research and questions that shape our understanding of the ocean. Through engaging, hands-on learning experiences, children will have the chance to connect scientific ideas with the living world just beyond Sarasota’s shoreline, where estuaries, mangroves and the Gulf of Mexico make marine science part of the region’s daily landscape.

That local connection matters. Sarasota is a community whose identity is deeply tied to the water, from its fishing traditions and barrier islands to the environmental challenges facing coastal habitats. For young learners, a visit to Mote SEA can turn broad concepts—adaptation, conservation, ecosystems—into something tangible and immediate. Science becomes less a subject to memorize than a way of noticing: how an animal survives, how a habitat changes, and what responsible stewardship might look like.

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium has long combined research, education and public engagement, giving families a window into the careful work undertaken to protect marine life. The Mote Science Education Aquarium extends that mission in a setting designed to make discovery accessible and active. Homeschool Days are particularly well suited to families seeking learning experiences that move beyond the page and encourage questions that may not fit neatly into a worksheet.

The monthly class series includes programming designed for younger students, ages 6 to 9, while the broader Homeschool Days offering welcomes learners through age 14. That range makes the event a natural gathering point for families with children at different stages—each able to encounter marine science at an appropriately challenging level and leave with new questions of their own.

Homeschool Days takes place Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at the Mote Science Education Aquarium, 225 University Town Center Drive, Sarasota. For families looking to make the Gulf Coast itself part of the curriculum, the morning offers an inviting place to begin.
