For children who regard every tide pool as a laboratory and every fish tank as an invitation, science class can happen far beyond a desk. At Mote Science Education Aquarium, Sarasota’s marine world becomes the curriculum: bright, moving, occasionally mysterious, and close enough to touch through carefully designed, hands-on learning.
Homeschool Days offers students ages 6 to 14 an afternoon of exploring the questions that animate Mote’s work. What lives beneath the Gulf’s surface? How do scientists study marine animals and their habitats? What can observation, experimentation, and curiosity reveal about the waters that shape life along Florida’s coast? Rather than treating marine science as a collection of facts, the program gives young learners a way into the process itself.
The format is built with growing minds in mind. Monthly classes are offered for children ages 6 to 9, students ages 10 to 14, and families seeking a shared experience for learners across the full 6-to-14 range. That flexibility matters for homeschooling families, whose school days often unfold through a mix of ages, interests, and independent discovery. The fall semester’s programs are scheduled in the afternoons, leaving room for the kind of unhurried exploration that makes a museum or aquarium visit feel less like a field trip and more like an unfolding investigation.
Mote’s presence in Sarasota has long connected the region’s everyday relationship with the sea to serious marine research and public education. At Mote SEA, that connection is made tangible for a new generation. The aquarium is not simply a place to look at aquatic life through glass; it is an educational setting where local waters, scientific questions, and the habits of careful observation come together. For students, the experience can make the Gulf feel both more familiar and more wonderfully complex.
Homeschool Days takes place Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at Mote Science Education Aquarium, 225 University Town Center Drive, Sarasota. With age-specific and family-centered classes offered during the fall semester, the program provides a thoughtful way for homeschool students to spend an afternoon learning where Sarasota’s most enduring subject—the sea—takes center stage.
