Environmental Science Scout Merit Badge (Virtual Program)
In Sarasota, environmental science is not an abstract subject.

In Sarasota, environmental science is not an abstract subject. It is visible in the mangrove roots along the bay, in the seagrass beds that shelter young fish, and in the daily work of understanding how land, water, weather and human choices shape one another. For Scouts working toward the Environmental Science merit badge, a virtual workshop on October 10 offers a chance to examine those connections from home—with Sarasota’s coastal landscape never far from mind.
Designed as a live, interactive session, the program will guide Scouts through the merit badge workbook while introducing key concepts through demonstrations. The format is especially well suited to environmental science, a field that rewards close observation and practical experimentation. A kitchen table can become a small laboratory; ordinary household materials can help turn a complex idea into something visible and memorable.
The registration confirmation email will include the Oceanography workbook, along with a guide to the household materials needed for several hands-on activities. That preparation gives the program a useful rhythm: Scouts can arrive ready to participate rather than simply watch. Most merit badge requirements will be completed during the workshop, making the session a concentrated opportunity to ask questions, test ideas and work through the material with guidance.
For Sarasota families, the program also reflects a broader local culture of environmental awareness. The region’s beaches, preserves, waterways and working waterfronts make science part of everyday life, whether the question involves stormwater, coastal habitats, marine species or the effects of a changing climate. A virtual gathering can bring that sense of place into homes across the community while allowing Scouts to take part regardless of distance, transportation or weather.
There is a quiet value in learning this way. Merit badges are often remembered not for the requirement checked off, but for the moment a subject becomes tangible: a demonstration that makes a system click, a question that leads somewhere unexpected, or a new awareness of the living world just beyond the window. This workshop offers that kind of entry point, with structure and experimentation built into the afternoon.
The Environmental Science Scout Merit Badge virtual program takes place Saturday, October 10, 2026, online. Scouts should register in advance so the workbook and materials guide can arrive with the confirmation email, leaving time to gather the household items needed for the hands-on activities.
