Before the first rush of school groups and weekend visitors, Sarasota’s underwater world will offer a quieter kind of encounter: the measured glide of rays, the shifting blue of aquarium windows, and the chance to explore without the usual sensory intensity. Sensory SEA, an early-opening program at Mote Science Education Aquarium, is designed for visitors with sensory processing differences or autism spectrum disorders—and for the families, caregivers, and companions who experience the aquarium alongside them.

The event reflects a broader understanding of what inclusion can look like in a cultural and educational space. Aquariums are places of wonder, but they can also be challenging environments, with bright displays, layered sounds, crowds, and unexpected transitions. By adjusting the atmosphere, Mote is making room for guests who may engage with the natural world differently, while preserving the sense of discovery that brings people through its doors in the first place.

During Sensory SEA, the aquarium will provide a calmer setting through softer lighting, reduced noise levels, and minimized visual stimulation whenever possible. The changes are subtle but meaningful: a gentler threshold into the building, more breathing room for observation, and an environment in which families can follow their own rhythms. For some visitors, that may mean lingering before a favorite exhibit; for others, it may mean taking in the experience in shorter, more manageable intervals.

Mote Science Education Aquarium has long connected Sarasota with the marine life of the Gulf and the scientific work devoted to understanding and protecting it. Its public spaces translate research into encounters that are immediate and memorable, inviting visitors to look closely at the ecosystems beyond the shoreline. Sensory SEA extends that invitation, recognizing that access is not simply a question of getting inside, but of feeling comfortable enough to participate.

The morning also offers a particularly fitting way to experience the aquarium: slowly, attentively, and with the distractions softened. In a region shaped by water, wildlife, and an enduring curiosity about the natural world, the program suggests that meaningful exploration can take many forms.

Sensory SEA begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Mote Science Education Aquarium, 225 University Town Center Drive, Sarasota. The aquarium will open its doors an hour early exclusively for this sensory-friendly experience.
