In Sarasota, the sea is not a distant horizon so much as a daily presence—threaded through the economy, the culture, and the questions that shape life along the Gulf. The SEA & Do Lifelong Learning Workshops offer adults a chance to look more closely at that familiar world, replacing casual observation with the pleasure of informed discovery.
Designed for curious adult learners, the in-person workshops pair focused lessons with hands-on activities led by education professionals from Mote. The format is both accessible and substantial: participants can expect clear instruction, practical exploration, and the kind of close attention that makes marine science feel immediate rather than abstract. Species identification, animal biology, and the effects of human activity all become entry points into understanding the waters that define this region.
That local relevance is part of the program’s appeal. Sarasota’s coastal environment is beautiful, productive, and vulnerable, and even routine choices—how we use water, what we release into it, how we respond to changing habitats—are connected to the health of nearby ecosystems. A workshop that teaches someone to recognize a species, understand an animal’s adaptations, or see the consequences of environmental pressure offers more than a morning of information. It builds fluency in the living systems just beyond the shoreline.
The sessions also draw strength from Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium’s longstanding role in the region. Since its beginnings as a small shark research laboratory, Mote has grown into a leading center for marine research, education, and conservation, with scientists working on questions that range from animal health to habitat protection. The workshops bring that work into the classroom through insights from Mote experts whose research connects directly to the day’s subject. For participants, that connection between active science and hands-on learning can make the experience especially vivid: the facts are not simply presented, but grounded in ongoing work.
Whether approached as a deeper dive into a longtime interest or as an invitation to become more attentive to Sarasota’s coastal surroundings, SEA & Do treats learning as a form of participation. The workshops take place Friday, October 9, 2026, at the Mote Science Education Aquarium, 225 University Town Center Dr., Sarasota. It is an opportunity to spend time with the Gulf’s stories—and to leave better equipped to read them.
