On a weekday when most classrooms are elsewhere, Sarasota’s questions get a little wilder. At Homeschool Days, the subjects of the day may include coral, currents, coastal habitats and the creatures that make the Gulf of Mexico their home—an invitation to approach science not as a chapter in a textbook, but as something alive, moving and just beyond the glass.

The gathering is especially well suited to Sarasota, a place where environmental awareness is woven into daily life. Our beaches, bays and estuaries are both backyard and laboratory, and the health of those waters touches everything from tourism and fishing to neighborhood quality of life. For local homeschooling families, an event centered on marine science offers a chance to connect lessons with the ecosystems outside their doors while meeting other families pursuing education on their own terms.

Mote Science Education Aquarium provides an apt setting for that kind of learning. The University Town Center facility extends Mote’s long-standing mission of exploring ocean science and sharing it with the public, bringing research, conservation and education into a space designed to spark curiosity. Mote has long been one of Sarasota’s most recognizable scientific institutions, and its work has helped make marine literacy part of the region’s cultural vocabulary. At the aquarium, a question from a child can lead in any number of directions: toward animal behavior, climate, engineering, conservation or the simple wonder of watching life underwater.

Homeschool Days also reflects a broader shift in how families think about educational enrichment. Learning can happen in a museum, along a shoreline or in conversation with an educator; it can be collaborative, hands-on and paced by curiosity. In a community with a substantial network of families seeking alternatives to conventional schooling, programs like this create a shared civic space—one where children learn alongside one another and adults find new resources for the journey.

Homeschool Days takes place Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Mote Science Education Aquarium, 225 University Town Center Dr., Sarasota. Families should check Mote’s official event information for program hours, registration details and any age or participation requirements before making plans.
