For Sarasota’s homeschooling families, a Tuesday at the aquarium can turn an ordinary school day into something far more memorable: a lesson with salt in the air, movement behind the glass, and questions that refuse to stay neatly inside a workbook.

Homeschool Days at the Mote Science Education Aquarium offer a chance to connect classroom learning with the living systems that define this coastal community. Marine science is not an abstract subject here. It is woven into the Gulf, the bay, the mangrove shoreline and the working life of the region. A visit to Mote gives young learners a place to consider how animals adapt, how ecosystems depend on one another and why conservation begins with paying close attention.

That sense of inquiry is central to Mote’s identity. Founded in Sarasota in 1955 by marine biologist Eugenie Clark, Mote Marine Laboratory has grown into an internationally recognized center for ocean research, while its education programs have helped generations of students see science as an active pursuit rather than a collection of facts. The Science Education Aquarium extends that mission in a setting designed to make marine discovery accessible and tangible. For homeschool families, the event also offers something equally valuable: a shared educational experience with other curious children and parents in the community.

The appeal of a program like this lies in its flexibility. A child fascinated by sharks may leave thinking about engineering or animal behavior; another may become absorbed by coral reefs, water quality or the small creatures often overlooked along Florida’s coast. Those connections can continue long after the visit, whether through a family beach walk, a conversation about local environmental issues or a new direction for the next week’s studies.

Homeschool Days take place Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the Mote Science Education Aquarium, 225 University Town Center Dr., Sarasota. Set in the heart of a city whose character is inseparable from the water, the aquarium provides an especially fitting classroom—one where learning begins with looking closely.
