For a young person growing up near Sarasota Bay, the ocean is not an abstraction. It is the shifting shoreline at Lido Beach, the seagrass beds glimpsed from a kayak, the working waters of the Gulf and the weather systems that can turn a calm afternoon into a lesson in nature’s scale. The Oceanography Scout Merit Badge virtual program offers Scouts a way to look more closely at that familiar world—and to understand the science beneath its surface.
Designed as a live, interactive workshop, the program will guide participants through the Oceanography merit badge workbook while exploring key concepts through demonstrations. Registration confirmation emails will include the workbook as well as a guide to household materials needed for several hands-on activities, bringing a measure of laboratory curiosity to kitchens, desks and living rooms.
That combination of structured learning and practical experimentation is particularly fitting for Sarasota, where marine life and coastal stewardship are woven into daily life. Oceanography here is not confined to a textbook: It informs conversations about red tide, storm surge, shoreline protection, fisheries and the health of the bay. For Scouts, the merit badge can serve as an introduction to the interconnected systems that shape the region, from microscopic organisms to currents, tides and the atmosphere above them.
Most merit badge requirements will be completed during the live session, giving Scouts the opportunity to work through the material with guidance rather than simply watching a presentation. As with any merit badge, participants should pay close attention to the instructions in their registration materials, including any work that may need to be completed after the workshop. The virtual format also makes the program accessible to families across Sarasota and beyond, eliminating travel while retaining the energy of a shared learning experience.
The Oceanography Scout Merit Badge program takes place online on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Participants can prepare by reviewing the workbook and gathering the household materials listed in the accompanying guide; the virtual setting becomes, for the day, a small and surprisingly lively field station—one where the Gulf of Mexico is never far from the conversation.
