For Sarasota children, the Gulf is not simply a blue horizon—it is a living classroom. A tide pool can become a lesson in adaptation, a shark tooth a prompt for scientific detective work, and a seagrass meadow a reminder that some of the region’s most important habitats are easy to overlook. Homeschool Days at Mote Science Education Aquarium offers young learners the chance to investigate that world with more than a worksheet and a screen.
Designed for homeschool students ages 6 to 14, the program brings marine science to life through engaging, hands-on experiences rooted in Mote’s research and education work. The classes are organized with different ages in mind: one track serves children 6 to 9, another is tailored to students 10 to 14, and a mixed-age option accommodates families learning together. That structure recognizes a familiar reality of homeschooling—the family classroom often includes a range of ages, interests, and questions.
For Sarasota, where waterways shape everything from the local economy to everyday recreation, programs like this carry a particular resonance. Understanding marine life is not an abstract academic exercise here. It is a way of reading the place we inhabit, from the creatures that inhabit Sarasota Bay to the environmental pressures facing Florida’s coast. Mote Science Education Aquarium, known as Mote SEA, extends the institution’s long-standing commitment to marine research and public learning into an approachable setting for families. Its educational programming invites students to look closely, ask questions, and connect scientific ideas to the waters beyond the classroom. For homeschoolers, the monthly format offers an opportunity to build community as well as knowledge, creating a recurring gathering point for families pursuing education on their own terms.
The fall semester’s Homeschool Day programs will take place in the afternoons, making room for focused exploration without requiring families to reshape an entire day around the experience. On Thursday, September 17, 2026, students and their grown-ups can meet at Mote Science Education Aquarium, 225 University Town Center Drive in Sarasota, for an afternoon of marine discovery.
