In Sarasota, where the Gulf is both backdrop and subject, a single dot can open an entire underwater world. This September, Mote Marine Laboratory invites young explorers to look closely at the ocean’s smallest details—and discover how a spot, stripe, or splash of color can help a sea creature survive.
“Dive into Dot Day” is a creative, interactive celebration of International Dot Day, the global observance inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ children’s book The Dot. In the story, a hesitant student begins with one simple mark and, through encouragement, finds the confidence to create. Mote’s program carries that spirit beneath the waves, using Vashti’s artwork as a springboard for hands-on exploration of marine life.
Participants will investigate the dazzling patterns and colors found throughout the ocean, considering why fish wear spots, how stripes can confuse predators, and what bright hues may communicate on a coral reef. The activities are designed to connect art and science in the most natural of settings: a place where observation is the first step toward curiosity, and curiosity can lead to stewardship.
That combination feels particularly at home in Sarasota. Mote has long served as a bridge between the region’s coastal environment and the people who live alongside it, translating research on sharks, sea turtles, red tide, coral reefs, and other marine ecosystems into experiences accessible to the public.
