For Sarasota families, the Gulf is not simply scenery; it is a living classroom. On Homeschool Day, students can trade worksheets for specimens, questions for experiments, and the familiar rhythm of home learning for an afternoon immersed in marine science at Mote SEA.

Designed for homeschool students ages 6 to 14, the program offers a hands-on introduction to the research and discoveries that shape our understanding of the ocean. Participants will explore different aspects of Mote’s marine science work through activities built to encourage observation, curiosity, and the kind of practical problem-solving that can make a scientific concept linger long after class ends.

That sense of connection matters in a coastal community like Sarasota. The health of local waters touches nearly every part of civic life, from fishing and boating to tourism, wildlife protection, and the daily pleasure of watching seabirds over the bay. Mote’s education programs give young people a meaningful way to understand those relationships—and to see that marine science is not an abstract subject happening somewhere else, but a field with immediate relevance to the place they call home.

Mote SEA, the Mote Science Education Aquarium, extends the organization’s long-standing commitment to public learning beyond traditional classroom walls. Its setting at University Town Center provides an accessible home for families while keeping the focus on the creatures, ecosystems, and research questions that define Mote’s work. For homeschoolers, the program also offers something especially valuable: a chance to learn alongside other families in a shared environment, with room for conversation, collaboration, and discovery.

The fall semester’s Homeschool Day programs will take place in the afternoons, with monthly classes organized for students ages 6–9, students ages 10–14, and families whose children span the full 6–14 age range. That structure allows younger and older learners to engage at an appropriate level while giving families flexibility as they plan a semester of enrichment.

The next Homeschool Day takes place Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at Mote Science Education Aquarium, 225 University Town Center Drive, Sarasota. Families can make an afternoon of exploring the venue and its marine-science offerings while giving young learners a close-up look at the research that helps define Sarasota’s relationship with the sea.
